She Said: Chuck 4.22 Chuck vs Agent X

Chuck 4.22: Chuck vs Agent X

Chucksters,
Once again as the season winds down, the stakes are raised and we get more answers to the questions that we’ve had all season. Those of you who follow my reviews and read my Burning Questions Friday Five a while back will remember that I was pretty sure that Vivian Volkoff wasn’t really evil and would redeem herself eventually. I think I’m finally ready to let go of that misconception and I’m looking forward to a showdown between Volkoff and Vivian when she figures out who Agent X is. More on the big reveal later…

I think I speak for all fans when I say how overjoyed I am that Chuck *finally* came clean to Ellie about everything! I’m also glad that she was so supportive and interested this time around rather than being mad. It’s clear that subconsciously, she realized what Chuck was doing, even if she didn’t know about the intersect. Even better, she seemed both proud and really excited to finally learn the whole truth about her family. For the first time since the glimpses we got in Chuck vs the Subway, Ellie has become a vital part of Team Bartowski and is starting to fulfill her family destiny. The last scene of the episode suggests that Chuck and Ellie are going to be carrying on their own covert mission to try to “fix” Agent X as the season wraps. Sibling spy action = win!

This week’s installment was certainly not without the humor we’ve come to expect from our favorite show. Although the whole “Las Vecas” plot had been pretty much given away in the promos and wasn’t terribly funny to begin with, I couldn’t help but laugh at the fact that Jeff was apparently the only one who knew where they were headed and was absolutely thrilled to be there, not to mention the fact that despite his “torture” (or likely in part because of it) he had a fabulous time on the trip. Also very funny were Devon and Morgan sharpening sticks and discussing splinters while Casey used the diversion to take out all the mercenaries. Meanwhile, back in Burbank, the scene with Sarah sitting on the stool with her gun in her waistband, talking on the phone while the commando strippers gyrated around her was absolutely hilarious. The shout-out to the “Weinerlicious girls” and the C.A.T. squad (in Libya!) was also appreciated.

The scene in England, while important plot-wise, was kind of odd. I was reminded of the scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows where Harry and Hermione go to visit Bathilda Bagshot and run into Voldemort instead. The whole scene just had the same anxious, creepy kind of vibe to it. Turns out that there was nothing to fear inside the house, but something evil was definitely headed their way in the form of Riley, his evil henchwoman and more hired goons, courtesy of Vivian. Mrs. Winterbottom (AKA Rambo Granny), is one of the more entertaining minor characters to come out of the Chuckverse in a while. Like the mother Casey never had, she’s street smart, suspicious and well-versed in both espionage and weapons, yet at the same time she manages to be maternal and the stereotypical English. Setting off the grenade using yellow yarn was a nice grandmotherly touch. If only the bomb was made of knitting needles and treacle tart…

Now onto the big reveal… Volkoff is Agent X. I’ll be honest, I really didn’t see it coming. As a matter of fact, a few minutes before the review I was explaining in the livechat all the reasons why it couldn’t be him. Once again, I was wrong about a “Volkoff”! Papa B intersected his best friend and created a monster. Mama B left her family and went undercover for 20 years trying to control him (save him? protect him?). The only person that Volkoff ever feared was himself. Definitely goes a long way to explain his wild mood swings and seemingly split personalities – the cold-blooded killer and merciless boss versus the puppy painter and ice cream eater that children just love. (I guess it’s no wonder that Vivian ended up being such a piece of work.) I do still wonder why it was that Mama B ever introduced Chuck to Volkoff (as Tuttle) in the beginning – to save herself, hoping that Chuck (or Ellie) could save Volkoff? She seemed surprised that Papa B had given all the information to Ellie in the laptop. Perhaps some of the gaps will be filled in during the next two episodes.

Speaking of the next two episodes, they are looking pretty AWESOME, as we’ve come to expect from the end of a Chuck season. Next Monday just can’t come fast enough!

Funny bits and quotes:
Chuck’s naivete about Las Vegas
Casey’s Osama Bin Laden targets – what a crazy coincidence
“I’ve never hiked in a tie” – Morgan
“Like the mother I never had” – Casey to Rambo Granny
“Ooh, um…is that a gun?..no” – Sarah on the phone while strippers dance around her
“Like this? ‘Cause I got 3 more where that comes from” – Jeff, waving a $1 at Riley’s evil henchwoman
Yvonne once again proves that she can do any accent
“What? I knew we were going to Vecas! This place is amazing! They grow some magic fungus up there in them hills!” -Jeff, upon arriving in Las Vecas State Park

So, what did you guys think? Did you know all along it was Volkoff?

Today marks the tenth anniversary of the Chuck series finale. It feels like a decade …

  1. I still think we are going to find out that Vivian Volkoff is Chuck/Ellie’s half-sister. It makes a lot of sense. If that is the case, I could see a neat little wrap up as Volkoff himself is “fixed” by Chuck and Ellie and reunites with Vivian.

  2. Im so upset, i have been waiting forever to see these last two episodes and I just found out that I have Baccalaureate(night b4 graduation, rememberance) next monday at 7, so im going to miss one of the best episodes ever on Chuck. Im so Mad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙁

  3. I loved the episode, and the twist that Agent X is Volkoff. No, I didn’t see it coming, either. Of course, as usual, a wonderful plot twist DOES come with a few plot loopholes or discrepancies in the charachters’ back stories, but who cares?

I loved Morgan’s reaction shot when Jeff protested about “that Baloney woman” controlling Big Mike. And Casey & Mrs. Winterbottom were a delight together.

One little quibble, though. In the Wedding Planner episode, Chuck was carrying a gun in the parking garage. Maybe it was a tranq gun, though it seemed like the scene called for a real one. Either way, if he was carrying a gun to pull off a con at a phony wedding, shouldn’t he have been carrying one when possibly confronting the mysterious Agent X?

Nice review, but how could you not mention Chuck’s Intersect demonstration to Ellie, de-sleeving Morgan’s shirt, and ending with spoken Japanese? Great little scene, as everyone watched with pride.

And, perhaps because of the suggestions from some fans on this website, halfway through the episode, when Jeff stumbled on the campsite, I wondered if he really WAS Agent X, and was about to go all ninja on the mercenaries.

  4. I somehow always guessed it was Volkoff, especially when Ellie said that it wasn’t Chuck. It was a great episode though. Sarah in a bathtub was awesome along with Morgan and Devon engrossed with their spears while Casey takes out the enemies. This was just a perfect episode that really pushes the arc forward.

  5. I think I was the only one who associated the England scene with Bathilda Bagshot! Hahahaha! It seems you like HP as much as I do, Cay. And yes, in what Agent X respects, I didn’t see it coming too! As a matter of fact, in certain moment I thought it will be Jeff…

  6. It sounds as if Hartley Winterbottom (rather delightful sort, I must say) was a rad dude before the proto-Intersect went awry. Is it possible that the “Tuttle” persona was more or less who Winterbottom really was?

I blew a gasket seeing Sarah in the tub. Just sayin’…

I had to laugh at Chuck’s “samurai” demo, but I’d have thought somebody going crazy with the katana would use “boku” or even “ore”, but certainly not “watashi”…

Mother Winterbottom may be even more badass than Beckman. Apparently she and Casey are kindred spirits… maybe her first name’s “Vera”? 😉

Yes, the whole episode seemed to show the seams where the disparate stories were joined, but I still enjoyed it. Sure hope the last two are just as awesome, if not more so.

  7. I have sort of mixed feelings about this episode. I thought it was fun, but it led the show in a direction which makes me nervous.

One: I love dramatic irony. Watching the interplay between who someone really is who the people around them think they are is pretty much one of the main reason I love shows with secret identities. With Ellie now in the know, the show has lost that.
Two: It seems to leading the show into Chuck and Sarah going rogue, and I’ve never been a fan of “private espionage”. I also can’t see Chuck setting bad guys up to kill each other or planting evidence to get someone arrested like Michael Westen, which leave the question of exactly what they would be able to do if they didn’t have someone to come and lock away bad guys or deal with whatever device the Team stole from them after a mission.

There’s a part of me that wants, in the end, for them to “fix” Hartley and get him released. Everyone goes off happily, and then we get a shot of Hartley smirking and suddenly realize that it was never the intersect that made him turn. He decided to do it all on his own.

    • I like idea that Hartley is really bad. Another thought I had is that Vivian thinks Chuck is Agent X uses the Norseman to kill him only to have it track on her father’s DNA and kill him. If they do this, Dalton will be missed.

      • My first thougth when they described the Norseman would be it would be like one of the weapons used in Batman I believe, where it kills everyone with a certain set of DNA. While I doubt it would happen it might be interesting if what yous said were to happen, and Vivian than accidently kills herself in the process.

  8. Nice review and excellent speculation. Not sure if an explanation has been given for Moma B 20 year mission outside the question Chuck asked.. Going to have to wait and see if moma B provides more insight.

Does make more sense to desire of the parents to try and protect Ellie and Chuck and why it concerned Papa B that he wouldn’t be able to protect them if he should die.He felt confident Chuck could continue his work and was sure Ellie and Chuck working together would succeed. This is something I don’t think Mama B was aware. Thanks for sharing

  9. My husband and I realized who it was at the exact same time, which was hillarious. We had been talking about all the options before the episode aired and never thought of Volkoff. However, when Ellie started describing what she knew of Agent X, we looked at each other and said “OH MY GOD! Volkoff!”. And it made perfect sense. The reactions to the reveal were also excellent. Well done!

I’m actually nervous about the next two episodes. And that’s why I love this show.

  10. itabashi zangitan

I just can’t believe all these people think Agent X is Alexei Volkoff!!! He’s obviously NOT.

The photo that Chuck takes out of Agent X’s spy lock box at the end of the episode isn’t actually a photo of Alexi Volkoff. It’s really a photo of …

    wait for it ….

007 from the Living Daylights. 😉

Therefor, James Bond is the real Agent X.

  11. Did anyone else see the irony of the names Frost and Winterbottom? It will be interesting to see what Mama B. really knows about Hartley.

Could it be that Chuck will not only bring his own “family” closer together by the end of this season but also the Winterbottoms as well?

  12. You know, I haven’t seen one person mention this, but now we have a logical explanation for a Russian villain having an English accent.

And wouldn’t Niles Crane have s**t his pants seeing Daphne’s mother manning a machine gun!

  13. Actually, for a few minutes, I thought it was Jeff as Agent X.

  14. randomchuckfan

You really didn’t see it coming?? Come on, it was so obvious! Got it figured out by the 10 minute mark, if I recall correctly.(When Ellie said Chuck couldn’t possibly be the first Intersect, because it was first deployed before he was even born, or something like that) Couldn’t join the live chat(diff. time zone, boo!), but it sure sounds fun! 🙂

  15. Seems almost too many things to bring to a conclusion in just 2 more episodes–hope the marriage is not put off until season 5. I had no suspicion of who agent x was/is until Ellie’s remarks about age-according to previous expisodes agent x’s brain should be fried.

  16. I can’t believe it’s almost over. I loved this episode, I thought it was hilarious. I can now die happy with the image of Sarah (my celeb lay) in the bathtub emblazoned in my mind. Is the lack of news from NBC scaring anyone? I’m scared that this could be the end. I could be overreacting and everything could be alright at the big Peacock, but if my nightmares are true, then let me be the first to say that it has been an honor to be a fan of such a beloved show, and I thank you all.

    @Larry1234:

X’s brain is sort of fried-his personality is no longer his own, remember?

  18. I had a weird feeling that it could be Volkoff, but then I dismissed that idea, because it was ridiculous, but once again I was wrong

  19. Maybe i am dreaming this out of htin air…but there seems to have bene a nice little reference to the movie True Romance. The conversation between Awesome and morgan while they were making spears…morgan is talking about his first kill…”the first one is the hardest….no kidding”. tony Soprano says this in the motel before he attacks and then is killed by alabama.

Anyway, good episode but Zac and Yvonne must really not get along naymore…there is no chemistry between them.

  20. Genuine Somerset resident here! Firstly the house was somewhat anachronistic for our county. It’d stand out! I guess stone cottages aren’t easy to come by in L.A. [GG]. The sheep, the countryside and the wall; yes, I’ll buy that!

I heard a few tiny antipodean vowel drifts in Yvonne’s English accent, but it was pretty darned good! I love Millicent Martin’s Granny Winterbottom; it’d be great to call her back some time.

My usual bullet point comments plus BONUS Somerset song here:-
