It’s Official: NBC Renews Chuck for Season 5! (UPDATED)

Rejoice, Chucksters! NBC officially announced that they’ve renewed Chuck for a fifth season!

Word leaked Wednesday afternoon that NBC and Warner Bros. were nearing a deal for renewal, and now NBC has made it official. The initial order is for 13 episodes with an option for more, just like the previous four years. No word yet if Chuck will stay on the schedule Mondays at 8/7c or move elsewhere. Expect to find out when NBC unveils their new primetime schedule to reporters on Sunday and advertisers on Monday.

Josh Schwartz Tweeted a math question as his form of confirmation: “what’s the square root of 25?”

He then added: “The passion of the CHUCK fans has been heard again… We are all truly lucky to have the greatest fan base on tv. Thank you.”

(Thanks to Chad for our beautiful new banner.)

Updated 12:22PM: Natalie Abrams from TV Guide and Stuart Levine from Variety are reporting that season 5 will definitely be Chuck‘s final season, as many of us expected. (Twitter keeps breaking, so can’t link.) The pro here is that NBC has given the writers the chance to finish up the show on their terms instead of this constant suspense of whether the last episode of the season is really the last episode of the series.

Updated 05.15.11: NBC announced their full lineup today – Chuck will move to Fridays at 8/7c for its final season. Also, Bob Greenblatt, new NBC president, talked to TVLine about the decision to bring Chuck back for a final, 13-episode season:

TVLINE |  Why did you decide to make Chuck‘s upcoming fifth season its last?
It seemed to be the way to end it appropriately for the fans who love it, and not get into a situation where it might end or might not end and then it ends and we haven’t concluded the storyline. It gives [producers] a chance to plan for it. I think that’s the best way to do it.

TVLINE | You only ordered 13 episodes of Chuck. Any chance you’ll increase that number?
I don’t think so. Unless suddenly we have 10 million viewers watching it on Friday night, then it would.

    Melissa

  2. yeah team bartowski!!!nice job!!hoping now for a full season pick-up!

  3. wow.yes yes yes.

  4. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

  5. Great news. Now we can enjoy Monday’s finale knowing that there is another season of episodes yet to come.

  6. OMG .. Thanks NBC !

  7. i seriously love this fandom for fighting the odds everytime woohoo now i can enjoy the finale in peace

  8. Glad NBC and WB and of course the fans came through to get Chuck a season 5!

  9. They’re saying it will be the final season, but that’s O.K. FIVE Seasons of CHUCK will have been a great run – and a great accomplishment by all involved with the show.

Every show ends at some point, that’s “TV Life.” I think it would be AWESOME if they make the last episode of the series a “musical one” like they’ve done on some other shows – and end with Carol Burnett’s classic, “I’m so glad we had this time together……” Still brings a lump to my throat when I think of how much joy THAT show brought me as a kid – and how much joy CHUCK has brought me as an adult!!

Soooo…. Let’s ENJOY Monday’s finale and REVEL in our last season when it starts up!!

    Congratulations, everybody. It’s PARTY time!!!!!

    • I’m happy to be getting s5, its 3 more seasons than many expected we would get.

The news about it being the final season is bittersweet. It means we will have to say goodbye to our show at the end of S5. However as stated it allows them to finish the story in the way they would like to. Hopefully if picked up for more episodes that is known early enough in the production schedule that they can adjust that ending accoridngly.

It will also give cast, crew and showrunners more time to prepare for their futures.

I have no doubt that many of them will have bright futures ahead of them.

I believe there is an old expression in showbusiness – “leave them wanting more”

I have no doubt that S5 will be so great that at the end we will all be left wanting more, yet very satisfied with the amazing show that we have shared over 5 seasons.

  10. I cheerded so hard that I think my neighbours heard me :D, great news !!! I seriuously CANNOT wait for the season finale knowing this won’t be the last all new Chuck episode I will ever see. WHOOOOOOOO HOOOOOO !

  11. Dude, That’s AWESOME!! :DD Can’t wait!!!

  12. So the universe is at peace and all is well. 🙂

  13. Assuming all the cast is still under contract for next season, hooray.

  14. I kind of hope there’s no back 9 this time. Just concentrate on telling the tightest, most well crafted story they can. Has the word on No Ordinary Family come out yet? Maybe Ali needs a job…

  15. Tvguide says the 5th and FINAL SEASON of Chuck will consist of 13 episodes http://www.tvguide.com/News/NBC-Pickups-Handler-Azaria-1033043.aspx

  16. Great news!

I hope the writers will give us the ultimate season of Chuck!

While I LOVED season 4 (especially vis-à-vis Season 3), the story felt a bit disjointed, so I hope that they will give us (and for Zach and Yvonne to act) a great conclusion to the series!

  17. Have they said whether it will return in the fall or spring yet?

  18. Yaaaay!!! So Happy Right Now!!!

  19. Congratulations! Hope the show goes on syndication soon after! More people need to discover this fun and funny show.

  20. I heard we’re back in the fall. Season 4 DVD should probably be out in August I assume. I’m fine with just 13 episodes.

  21. A very welcome piece of news. Thanks, NBC and WB! And all the advertisers too!

And don’t forget the great folks of ChuckTV who always go the distance and then some! 😀

  22. Glad the writers can end on their own terms but could we get some more episodes? Lets start the campaign now! Fans each year have fought for another season a couple of additional episodes should not be that hard.

  23. This is awesome news! We get one more season of chuck! I’m sad that it will but at least we’ll get a really awesome season.

  24. well done nbc and wb for renewing chuck for a season 5 and a big thank you

  25. Buy More Bagger

I am thrilled that Chuck will be returning for a 5th & Final Season.

I am hoping that the Wedding will happen on Monday & that the marriage of Chuck & Sarah at least, will not be part of the Season 4 Finale Cliffhanger.

I would like them to start off Season 5 as a marrried couple & for Season 5 to begin & end with them together & working with Casey, on a great Season 5 ending to the series, as the Family that Team Bartowski has always been.

Also, one thing that I hope for Season 5 is no more extended breaks between episodes. I think it’s OK to take a week off every now & again but no more 3 week or month long breaks.

I think it hurts the Pace of & Interest in the show.

PS Give us a Christmas Episode next Season!

The Christmas Episodes in Season 1 & 2 were some of the best in the series & I think that they were missed in Seasons 3 & 4 a great deal.

Lastly, thanks to all of the other Chuck fans out there, NBC, & Mel for having such a great site & everybodys work that together brought Chuck back, so that such a great show could be finished up properly.

Thanks to all that had a guiding hand in this great news.

    BMB.

  26. BOYAAAAH, YES GOOO CHUCK
    SEASON 5!!! CHUCK

  27. Wow best Friday the 13th eveeeeeer

  28. Yes, let the creators tell the final story, and let us enjoy the run.

  29. So happy there’s a season five. And actually glad to have NBC announce its’ intentions so Chris and Josh and the writers can end the story the way they envisioned it for our heroes. Can’t wait for Monday, and next year.

  30. I still think season 6 could be a possibility despite reports if not let’s make 100 ep milestone. Mel whats your take?

  31. I’m glad, and I hope we get the full season (why wouldn’t we?). Though I am sad that it will be the last because I love Chuck. But you know, there’s always a time for a show to stop, and at least it is going to end on the writers’ terms. I’m aslo happy that I at least get it for my first year at college. Dang. How am I going to find another show after Chuck ends?

  32. Is there only 13 episodes? Or is there going to be a back order of 9? Either way, in episode 13 or 22, I think the show will end with Sarah saying to Chuck, “I’m pregnant”.

That would be the best ending ever!!!

  33. Big Frakkin’ Smile. Since Wednesday! I think having a definite ending date will be fantastic–all the loose threads tied up. If I remember corerectly didn’t S&F always say the show was planned as a five year series? Can you imagine all the people that will be in that finale?

Note to Ali Adler: PLEASE come home for season 5. We need you!

  34. I said next campaign need to be the return of Ali Adler… And now that No Ordinary Family has been canceled, well… it’s a win-win…

  35. Great news. Sad that it’s the last season.Or is it just the last season on NBC??

  36. This is awesome news, NBC just gained my loyalty even if it will be the final season. It is cool that NBC is letting the crew of Chuck finish telling their story.

  37. I have the perfect last scene of the series finale– Chuck and Sarah back on the beach
Where they talked at the end of the pilot, they kiss then Sarah smiles and says she’s
going to have a baby. They cry and kiss some more, fade to black.

  38. *Whew…..sigh of relief* Thank you NBC and Warners Brothers for making it possible for Chuck’s story to have a satisfying conclusion and for allowing we the fans time to get on board with an end date (sort of like LOST). Now the writers can wrap up the story in a neat little bow.

  39. OMG!!! I’m so happy right now!
I hope it’s going to be a full season since it is pretty official that season 5 will be the last one…
OMG! it’s going to be great! can’t wait!

  40. WHEW!!! I am so excited that NBC is renewing Chuck for a 5th Season, mainly because I feel like ever show needs a resolve and the way the trailer for this season finale looks, it would have been an injustice to just leave it that way! So congrats to the Cast and Crew of Chuck, and way to go to us, the fans! 🙂

  41. Thank You NBC and WB for coming together and making a 5th season happen. Thanks to the fans and websites like this ones for all the campains to get the show renewed the last 3 years. Thanks to the cast and crew for making the best show ever.GOD Bless!

  42. Chuck Bartowski Zero tollerance fan....

    I Love Chuck <3

I almost cried when I heard that Chuck might be cancelt :'(

All chuck fans , thx for supporting chuck 😀
i hope for a 6 season i will pay NBC big time money for it :D….

  43. I am so happy!!!!! I am also glad that they have said this is Chuck’s final season because regardless of how much I love the show I want it to end in the right way and I have always wanted the writers to know before hand that they have a set number of episodes before the end to make it the biggest and best season ever! I don’t want my favorite show to end on a cliffhanger and now it doesn’t have to!YAY!!!!

  44. Not that it really matters, but I was just over to E! online and Chuck did win the Save One Show poll – I guess it worked.

    http://ca.eonline.com/uberblog/watch_with_kristin/b241761_save_one_show_2011_winner.html

  45. So, does this mean ya’ll want us to keep up the podcast? Hee! 😉

  46. so relieved that a season 5 will happen! not sure i’m liking the doom and gloom of that the 13 will be a wrap up for out favorite show! this show was the first thing that made me forget my stuff i was going through after my mom died, and so i took it as a personal mission to get renewed along with all the other caring fans! thank u NBC! i can’t wait to see the last one for season 4 and look forword to season five next fall! thanks to all the chuck fans and everyone on that set!

  47. speechless. This show is a fairy tale, in its subject matter and its tenure on TV. What show has squeaked by the axe so often? I am so happy right now. I don’t even care if the wedding takes place Monday cuz there’s still time. 🙂

All aboard fro Season 5: Meet Mamma Walker…

  48. to have the speculation start on episode 5.13.
    1. it will end peacefully with everyone going separate ways and chuck leaving the CIA when he a sarah have kids.
    2. it will end semi peacefully. Chuck and sarah will both be alive but as for the rest of them… Good luck. they leave the CIA after avenging the death of (someone). sarah have kids.
    3. it will end violentlly with sarah or chuck dieing but not both. ends with the funeral of either chuck or sarah.
    4. it will end Very Violent! sarah just had a kid and then both chuck and sarah die defending that kid (bit Harry Potterish). ends with a grave shot and morgan and alex holding baby Bartowski.
    5. it will end insainly violent. basically everyone dies other then chuck and some other nonsarah nonmorgan nonellie (probally awesome).
    6. it will end carzy and very unrealistic. Bryce, shaw, jill, lou, hanna, hugo panzer, volkov family, papa and mama B all appear in the episode (some in real life some in flashbacks).

However it ends (234ish) they should answer the unfullyanswered question of Why did bryce send chuck the intersect? like the ligit deatailed story version. it has to have some reason. his dad cant have invented it and him just get it randomly!
    Sorry started ranting. Opps

    • They’ve already answered that, awhile ago. Bryce couldn’t destroy it b/c he knew how important it was for the good guys but he also knew corruption went high up in the CIA so he sent it to chuck, the only Guy he knew for a fact he could trust, he also knew chuck could handle the intersect b/c of how well he did on. the exam that led to him being expelled from stanford

  49. The chances of a full season are problably very remote. NBC doesn’t want to advertise a ton of new shows for the fall. This lets them reduce the new shows airing all at once. Then in Nov/Dec they can start heavily promoting the show that will take Chuck’s place.

NBC has proved that massive promotion of just a few shows will get people to tune into the premier (The Event, The Voice). Trying to promote eight shows all at once is much less effective.

  50. Hi all, Its GREAT news that Chuck, Sarah & Team B will b back for Season 5. If the writers were smart they would write S5 in a way that it HAD 2 lead 2 a Season 6 (Let S5 & 6 b 13 episodes long.) What do people think?
