Chuck Moves to Fridays This Fall

NBC is presenting their 2011-2012 primetime schedule to reporters right now and sent out this press release in support of the call. The big news is that Chuck will move to Fridays at 8/7c in the Fall! Fans have been wondering for years how the show would perform in a different timeslot, away from the brutal competition on Mondays. Many have suggested Fridays as a good night; looks like we’ll get a chance to find out.

Joining Chuck on Fridays will be new show Grimm which I’ve been interested in since first hearing about it back in January. The night will be finished off with Dateline NBC.

  1. Do people watch TV Friday nights? I associate Friday nights with going out to dinner, going on a date, happy hour after work, and so forth. I can’t remember the last time I was hunkered down in front of the teeve at 8pm on a Friday. As a diehard fan, I’ll gladly change my ways. Not too sure about non-fans, though.

  2. Wow, this is disheartening. Fridays are worse than Mondays. I hope I’m wrong!

    • I don’t think the time slot matters much for the final season. The show was brought back to generate enough episodes for syndication. I do not think there is any real possibility for an extended episode order unless the ratings increase dramatically (which they won’t). I’m glad the producers will have the opportunity to end the show on their terms.

  3. Yeah :D! Loving this now I don’t have to get up early on tuesday to watch the new Chuck 🙂

  4. Are there really any big shows on Fridays? I’ve heard it usually isn’t a night that people will watch tv, so ratings might possibly go down… but I’m a die-hard Chuck fan and will still watch every episode!

  5. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friday_night_death_slot. Not the death slot

  6. I am okay with this. It seems proven over time that Chuck’s core audience is small, and total audience is in clear, slow decline. It was likely a condition of renewing the show that it gets put into the “death slot”, as we will watch it even if it’s on at 4am. Frankly I think this outcome is the best of all possible reasonable outcomes, 13 clearly defined episodes to end the show on their terms

  7. I’m half-and-half on this move. I’m happy with it because then when I watch it/exercise, I won’t have to worry about classes on Saturday. I’m saddened by it because then Mondays are back to being the worst day of the week….Hey! New thought! At least it made my last Mondays of high school darn good! Okay. I will live with it and be happy 😀

Love the new timeslot. Chuck should have moved there for season 3. The show’s fans would have moved with it.

  9. We all know Fridays are where shows go to die but I still am happy that Chuck is being moved there for its final season. Hopefully Chuck gets a back nine to reach the 100 episode mark, which is a great accomplishment for this fantastic series that wouldn’t be this far without the fans.

    • Mel, is there no chance at all for a back nine?

      • The NBC exec was quoted on TVLine as saying “I don’t think so” when asked that question. The exec qualified his comments by saying if Chuck suddenly starts pulling in “10 million viewers” an episode, things might change.

      • Thanks for the update.

  10. I’m dissapointed! Fridays? wow now what do I have to keep me going through the week? Never will my love for CHUCK die just now its my love for NBC!

Well, as much as I would like a full 24-episode season, I saw a good point on another website earlier today (can’t remember where though, unfortunately, otherwise I’d credit the commenter), but now they’ve said that season five will be the last, if the show gets extra episodes ordered, even if it does remain the final season, it might make the first finale of season five (assuming they keep the same season structure as three and four) less ‘impactful. Maybe not quite so literally, but if 5.13 ends with on the ‘ultimate’ happy ending – everyone retiring from the spy-life, marrying (Morgan and Alex?), and going on a long holiday abroad somewhere together (with Papa Bartowski back from the dead, of course!) – and then it turns out the season gets those extra episodes, could they make a second ‘ultimate’ happy ending finale for a second time… Yes, granted, both their season and mid-season finales so far have been awesome, I’m just not sure about this time… At least when we know we have thirteen episodes, we know we’ll have the definite ending (so long as it isn’t renewed, of course)…

Not sure if I’ve written that in the best/intended way, but the overall point is clear enough?

Also, as for the move to Friday nights, as someone who watches in the UK (both at the USA pace and UK pace), it’ll be much better for my sleeping habits to not have to stay up on the Monday night to watch a brand new episode before college – I could actually wait until the Saturday day-time, although the time I go to bed on most Fridays/Saturdays would probably mean that nothing would really change if I did decide to stay up for a new episode each week…

No matter if this is our final season, our last thirteen episodes, and no matter what day it’s on, however, I’m just happy we’ve got a fifth season – no complaints at all here!

  12. I’m happy with a Friday timeslot. Honestly.. it’s better off for that than putting it against House, HIMYM, and Dancing with the Stars.

  13. So is there still an option for a back 9?

    • Well yes…but the head of NBC said that if Chuck is to get a back 9 it has to have 10 million viewers..

  14. Chuck and Fringe back to back (assuming FOX doesn’t change Fringe’s time would be awesome.

A bit worried about what might happen if FOX changes Fringe’s timeslot to 8 or the CW changes Supernatural to 8 as well.

  15. http://www.tvline.com/2011/05/nbc-fall-schedule-chuck-wonder-woman-svu/

TVLINE – ‘You only ordered 13 episodes of Chuck. Any chance you’ll increase that number?’
Greenblatt – ‘I don’t think so. Unless suddenly we have 10 million viewers watching it on Friday night, then it would.’

In that case, it seems that the final season will not be extended.

    • If NBC can make more money by ordering nine more episodes of Chuck than airing reruns onr throwing out a mid-season replacement, they’ll order nine more episode. Remember, ratings and viewership contribute to what the network can charge for advertising but it’s not the only thing that determines profit and if Chuck makes a good profit on Friday, that will matter most.

  16. Not really sure if friday is a death slot cause many of my favorite shows were on friday. Sure not many people watch tv on fridays but i know chuck fans will. And if the plot is good the ratings might be good. besides no matter what slot they move it we all know the actual number of people watching is more then what the ratings are telling us. I look forward to friday. Some awesome to start the weekend with.
I’m just happy we got a 5th season

  17. This is a GREAT move.
Fridays is a good opportunity for Chuck.
Chuck has the most loyal fan base…they will follow and 4 to 5 million viewers on a Friday could lead to the extra 9 episode pickup….

  18. Are they positive that season 5 is going to be the final season?

  19. Didn’t Dallas run on Friday nights? I seem to recall back when it was on that it was an “event” to get your friends together for Dallas parties on that evening.

    • They also used to play the national anthem at midnight and again at 6 AM with a test pattern in between. Nowadays Friday night is the tomb of the unknown shows.

      • Personally, I liked Modern Farmer and Colonel Bleep, but what did I know.

Back to the real point: the Dallas shows became social events. Fridays are great for that — Mondays not so much. So, perhaps using a Chuck party as a social event is a way to recruit newbies? Use the summer to proselytize and introduce friends to the show. Then, have a weekly Chuck party on Friday.

Switch it from Friday Five, to Friday Six(pack).

  20. as international viewer it means i get to watch it on a saturday much easier than tuesdays

  21. Ummmmm doesn’t every one know on Friday I’m usually partyin partyin yeah

  22. I don’t care WHAT night CHUCK will be on. I’m just going to enjoy the “Final 13.” At this point, ratings aren’t going to matter. They’ll air all 13 episodes and we’ll bid a sad farewell. But it will have a great ride!

    • I agree.

I’m so happy that we have a season 5 (even if it’s the last one), that it doesn’t really matter for me if it’s 13, 19, or 22 episodes, as long as the final story arc is simply the best ever!

And it’s also good for Zach, Yvonne, Adam, Joshua and the others, because now they can prepare for their “after-Chuck” (though it’s already pretty much settled for Yvonne), and they can give their best acting for the last season.

I can’t wait to see tomorrow’s finale, and how it will impact season 5!

  23. 13 or 13+9, either way it’s better than getting canceled after the fourth season. Gives the writers a chance to write a story to end the show on their terms instead of the network’s.

Friday’s are less convenient for me. I’ll miss a few episodes because of weekend campouts for Boy Scouts but I’ll watch on DVR.

  24. Hi all, Like Alex I 2 am an international fan & have 2 wait till tuesday. At least now I’ll b able 2 watch it on Saturday. I dont think this will b Chuck’s final season – NBC will probably farm it out one of its subsideries so that it can reach sindacation. Hope Chuck does!!

  25. Let me confess. I haven’t had the time to watch Chuck, mainly because there’s too much I had to do. With the move to Friday, the only night I’ve nothing to do, I’ll be able to watch it more. So will others like me. Think about it.

    • Also, if the show does pull outstanding numbers that call for another season, USA will be a perfect home for Chuck. Agree?

  26. There are plenty of ways/directions Chuck could go! With this move NBC might finally realise They have had a hit show all along! What U reckon?

  27. Oh this is such good news. They finally corrected the biggest mistake of them all (it’s about dang time). Maybe they took the cue with what Fox did with Fringe. Is Friday night where most shows go to die? Yes, but I don’t think that will happen with Chuck. Also, the show wasn’t doing well on Monday’s anyway. Now with more promotion and MUCH less competition the show should do much better. The scenario that I envisioned happening about a month ago is now very possible: now that there will be much less competition, Chuck should start getting 2.5s and 3s regularly, and suddenly the show will be much less expendable. Even though they’ve announced that it’s the final season, I actually now wouldn’t be too sure about that. We might just get a season 6.

  28. Well at least the Smallville fans will have something good to watch Friday’s at 8pm now that show is over. An hour of Chuck on Friday nights is going to be a great way to start the weekend.

Well I’m happy to have a mini-season of Chuck to say goodbye, I’m still sad to know it is the final season.

I wonder if this show will be like the original star trek, which didn’t do well when it was on the air, but found quite a following in syndication.

I guess I can go back to hating mondays, after tomorrow night.

    • We can always do a Monday evening rewatch of Friday’s episode. Unless you really want ot watch The Sing-Off. Yuk!

  29. Other than Grimm (which looks high risk as it is), NBC’s new shows next season don’t look very interesting, I think they’ll be ordering more episodes of Chuck.

  30. I have never posted before now but I’ve been with you all since the beginning. I am happy for a fifth and final season and have watched the last 4 seasons from the start…(religously!..no offense intended Rick..:). But why don’t we go down fighting and start campaigning for Chuck right now….this Summer..instead at the end of its run! The likelyhood of another season is slim… but if Chuck is on it’s way out we can make history by doing what us Chucksters do best. It may not give us a back 9 but it may show that the Neilsen system is flawed. And that good quality, family entertainment is being offered up as fodder for poor televison because of skewed numbers. I have tweeted the advertisers and eaten my share of Subway and it occured to me that we fans have contributed to saving our beloved show for four years running now…I dont recall ever hearing of that before. It may not give us more Chuck (if it did it would be epic!) but it may bring more about viewership into the light. Thanks for indulging this rant and I slip back into silence ( see…this is why I dont post…Wordy!). I’ll be lurking around for tomorrow nights episode and will be with you all next season.

    • I agree. It’s better to keep it going. Even if it just shows the advertizes that Chuck fans are loyal and thankful for their support of a great show.

  31. To be honest, it would be impossible for the move to Friday nights to be harmful to Chuck, considering how low the ratings have gotten recently on Monday. Up against juggernaut TV shows on other channels, Chuck had little to no chance at holding its ratings on Monday nights. At least on Friday nights there will be less competition (despite the fact that less people watch TV on Friday nights).

Also, the 13 episode pickup was the best that any fan could ever hope for. The show was most likely on the edge of being cancelled and an extended order would mess up the finale of the series. Also, despite not reaching 100 episodes (Star Trek got to 79) Chuck might still be up for syndication.

A guy can dream right? 🙂

    • Did some research and found that a show could very well reach syndication with a minimum of 88 episodes. The 100 episode mark is usually a minimum for a 1/2 hour comedy. It also depends on hows many times the show will air per week so syndication is still possible even with out 100 🙂

  32. My only regret about the move to Friday is that I will no longer have something to look forward to in the evening after a tough Monday. Otherwise, I am hooked on the show and have a DVR so it doesn’t really matter to me where NBC chooses to put the show as long as they put it somewhere.

Also, if this is to be the last season, then my vote is to not bother to post ratings numbers anymore. I would prefer to avoid all of that and simply enjoy the last 13 episodes…

  33. I say we get a small Chinese village of, i don’t know, say, 4-5 million people to watch Chuck and we will get the ratings in no time 😀

  34. This is totally bitter sweet but hey we had one heck of a run. I like the time change Mondays are way too hectic for me. So, Chuck date night for 13 wks is penciled in on my calendar.

  35. I know a lot of people think moving to Friday will be great for Chuck, personally I think getting it away from some of the heavy-hitters of Monday night will be good but I also don’t watch live tv on Friday nights. When it was on Monday nights I could watch it live because I was home, but Friday nights I’m rarely home so it will mean I’ll have to watch chuck on DVR/On Demand/Online. Still I’m glad to see the show get another season!

  36. Fifth and final! What a great opportunity. No show lasts forever, so I think it is best of possible worlds that NBC has recognized the existence of the core audience that enjoys this show and is giving the Chuck creative team the distinct opportunity to close out the show on their terms. I’m looking for some great missions, more Chuck nerd-herding, and lots more kick-ass blond she-male warrior super CIA agent! Looking forward to seeing the show go out in style.

  37. Well it doesn’t really matter what day they changed it to, since it’s the last season. If it wasn’t the last season, I’d be concerned, since the Friday timeslot led to the infamous “To Be Continued” on Las Vegas, which still annoys fans of the show. Thankfully NBC has learned from their mistake.

  38. Friday Night Death Slot, well at least Chuck fans get the chance to have an official end rather than being left up in the air. Lol on another note, NBC exec say that they will order an extra 9 episodes if Chuck manages to pull a 10 million view. LOVE YOU CHUCK, YOU ARE THE BEST SHOW EVER.

  39. Chuck has four elements that draw me in to watch the show…adventure, romance, comedy and closure at the end of each episode. Is there a T.V. Show on that brings this type of entertainment home and if so where? I am so sick of all of the CSI and Law and Order type stuff on T.V. Not to mention all of the annoying reality shows. I don’t know much about the entertainment business but it seems that some of the stupidest shows and movies get better P.R than what Chuck is getting…maybe they need to come out with a Chuck and Sarah doll.

  40. OMG OMG, hahahahaha, lol, OMG. I love how as soon as NBC says the only way they would consider an extra 9 episodes for season five is if Chuck pulls a 10 million viewer rating. Well all American Chuck fans pulled together and accepted that mission. Chuck vs The Cliffhanger managed to pull a series high at 10.10 million. There u go NBC, here we go Friday night u don’t scare us.

  41. The key for a back nine pick up, is if one, NBC’s other shows bomb, and Chuck’s percentage of viewers goes up on Friday night. Total number of viewers going up is doubtful because its Friday, but if it could win its time slot or finish a strong second, NBC will have to give Chuck strong consideration for a back nine.

  42. so, how do we get 10 million viewers to watch every week?
I’m also an international viewer so i gotta wait till tuesdays.
But A LOT of my friends watch it online because Chuck airs at such an inconvenient time here…i wished the online views also contributed 🙁

  43. you know what?!

    10 million viewers?? challenged accepted.

  44. I liked the episode. However the Morgan thing is getting a little odd. I mean at the beginning of the show, they said that there is only a few choice PPLE could have the intersect. So there was (Supposed to be Brice), then Shaw, Chuck’s Dad, Chuck (Now I can see Chuck’s Dad and chuck having the ability because they are related), the two they put them into for the experiment before giving the computer back to Eli. Then there was Agent X (The original one), and now Morgan. Could it be that only a choice few goes crazy then a choice few that can have it? I am hoping that Chuck can at least use the glasses too, and they both could have it. That would make it kinda interesting… I mean look how long it too chuck to learn how to control it. Now Morgan is going to have to learn that control.

I am hoping that the break off from the CIA/NSA will not become to odd. I hope they don’t become a group like the Ring, but good guys. The Govt will look for them also. And what about Beckman. NBC and Chuck promised to have more of her, on the monitor and in person, and she was only in person on a few episodes. I hope they plan on including her on the new season…

Ok, on to the series ending. I was thinking back and there are many shows that don’t even make it past 3-4 years. I am glad NBC didn’t play a Vegas or Knight Rider with Chuck. At least Chuck can put together a final Season fitting for it’s fans. I was part of the group that got together to put together the campaign for save chuck between season 2 and 3. And I can’t believe that it would have to come to that again (And I don’t even think NBC would listen to that). The rating system has been and always be flawed at it’s current way it is conducted. It don’t count PPLE watching it on DVRs, Internet viewing and such. I am sure all the PPLE that watch, that are not included, not to mention members in their families, they could get the numbers up to the 10 mill mark. I have been watching Chuck since S01E01, up to last night, faithfully. And I have never been contacted once to see what I watch. Nor how many PPLE in my family watch it.

And by looking at the line up, it looks like once Chuck is taken off, there will not be too much more for me to watch on NBC. I watch local news on my Fox affiliate and then switch to TBS for Conan (Another bad mistake for NBC). I will stick with FOX and the very few shows I watch on CBS and ABC. I wish these channels would at least try a season or two to run shows that don’t meet major TV numbers, on their Cable stations. Then they will see the followings they have..

    • I hadn’t watched this episode yet. Thanks for that. Isn’t there a spoiler thread where you can discuss plot points?

  45. I was thinking that Smallville did surprisingly well on Friday night and now it is history–after a great run. I hope F&S reward us with a great season 5 with absolutely no romantic anxst—concentration should be on the adventure, comedy and the romance. F&S over the seasons have had some tremendous screw ups and I can only hope they have saved the best for last–they can also come up with some tremendous positive episodes. Lets hope for 13 great episodes and a fantastic finish.

    • Smallville is actually a good example of a show with a loyal audience doing well on Friday. Now its on CW so it had a lower bar threshold, but CW tried to kill off Smallville when it moved it to Friday. But its audience followed it and gave CW good numbers for Friday and stayed on air. If Chuck’s audience follows those Monday numbers will look much better on a Friday, and with ABC’s extreme Home Makeover moving to Friday, Chuck could move into a solid second place for its time slot. Much better than the fourth place it usually has. That might be enough to convince NBC to order a back nine pick up. Still a long shot, but Keep Hope Alive.

  46. This is great news! That means I’ll be able to watch HIMYM and have something to watch on Fridays after the departure of Smallville. I’m thrilled that Chuck will be able to end on its own terms, even if it’s bittersweet that it’s ending.

  47. I’m with the majority here…a Friday move could be a great thing. I truly hope that numbers can be swung to make the show go longer.

  48. Smallville is the only show I can recall that has done well on Friday. Friday is where marginal shows are often put to test viewer loyalty. Friday could be OK for Chuck – UNLESS there’s a new show from another network, say WB, that looks interesting. (I wouldn’t be surprised to see another superhero TV show in Smallville’s old slot).

If we’d had to choose between Smallville and Chuck, of The Cape and Chuck, Chuck would be my 2nd choice. We’d record it and watch the episodes eventually. I’m guessing that would hurt ratings if we were a Nielsen TV household. This past season, only the deterioration of House scripts swung the choice of “live” viewing to Chuck.

  49. Watch “Grimes” this fall, Friday 8/7C, on NBC.

  50. Very effectively written information. Will probably be beneficial to anybody who usess it, together with myself. Sustain the great work – for sure i’ll check out more posts.
