NBC Boss Confirms Just 13 More Episodes of Chuck

After today’s executive session at NBC’s TCA presentation, Hitfix columnist (and all-around Chuck fanboy) Alan Sepinwall sat down with new NBC boss Robert Greenblatt to get answers to some questions that hadn’t been asked at the press conference itself. Among those asked was the possibility of more episodes of Chuck. In a word: no.

Finally, “Chuck” came to Comic-Con, and everywhere they’ve been going, it’s been, ‘Oh, this is the last season,’ and yet there are certain elements of fandom that will always hold out hope.

I know! I hate to disappoint fans, but it really is going to be the last season. I wanted to properly end it so that the fans, who deserve to know when it’s over, weren’t left hanging again, like it has every season, practically. At this point in time, there is no talk of extending it. They’re writing to the series finale.

Sure, he left himself an “out”, because things change, but as far as the decision makers are concerned, the upcoming 13 episodes are the final season of Chuck. I for one am looking forward to seeing what they can do when they know that they’re writing toward a series finale instead of being left hanging until the last minute.

Chuck: The Final Season premieres Friday, October 21 at 8/7c on NBC.

  1. why is it that season 5 has only 13 episodes? men, it’s the last season… please, i’m so crazy about chuck… and many fans/people are crazy w/ it… even when we introduce it to other people (like our friends), they would usually then love it… if they will not renew it after that said season just please make it longer…

  2. Soooo, I wonder if there is any chance of a “Chuck vs. The Movie” ala Firefly?

    • Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t Fedak asked that very question and he said that there weren’t any plans for a movie or a spinoff, but he’d be open to the idea?

  3. Would another network be able to pick up the show? Would the cast and crew be open to such a move?

  4. Has there been any talk about shopping this show around? USA network seems a likely candidate. They are an NBC/Universal affiliate. The 5 millions of regular “Chuck” viewers would fit right in. “Psych” gets renewed year in year out and gets by with 3 to 4 millions. The higher-rated “Burn Notice” gets 5. Although cable typically gets fewer viewers than network, the “Chuck” crowd is set in stone and very few would stop watching if it moved to USA.

    • No. The networks that picked up shows from other networks previously (USA, DirecTV 101, FX, AMC) are on the record stating that they’ll be developing their own original content from now on.

      • This must be a recent development. USA had no problem picking up “Law and Order: Criminal Intent” a year or two ago after NBC lost interest.

      • Criminal Intent moved to USA in June 2008 (source), which I believe was the last time USA picked up new episodes of a series that previously aired on broadcast TV. Syfy, FX, and DirecTV went on the record a year or so ago saying they would no longer “save” shows from broadcast TV, instead concentrating on producing original content. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Chuck go into syndication on USA and/or Syfy, though.

  5. Just because NBC has no plans to continue past this season, that doesn’t mean Warner Bros. can’t continue the show elsewhere. I wonder how the ratings this season will compare to the top shows on the CW and USA networks. Neither rock the richter scale in terms of ratings, if you will, so it seems logical to move “Chuck” either place and see how it’s ratings fair compared to the othe shows.

  6. WHAT?! Only 13 episodes! That can’t be it! It is on its FINAL SEASON for crying out loud NBC give, Chuck the 24 episodes it deserves!

  7. I never even knew what back nine pickups were until Chuck… Correct me if I’m wrong, but wouldn’t a back nine pickup give Chuck 100 episodes. I believe they deserve at least that.
