SUCCESS! Chuck Renewed For Third Season!

Multiple sources confirmed today that NBC will bring Chuck back for a third season consisting of 13 episodes. NBC will confirm this and announce when Chuck will air during their upfront presentation on May 19th. Unfortunately, to achieve this pickup, the show has to make some major budget cuts, including scaling back the number of episodes for some of the supporting cast and releasing two of the staff writers. A bit of a cloud on our silver lining, but at least we get more Chuck! Let the Nerd celebrations begin!

We want to take a minute to thank all of the fans who participated in the Watch/Buy/Share/Write campaign as well as the Finale & a Footlong campaign and the Have a Heart – Renew Chuck campaign. We are certain that the enthusiasm and intelligence exhibited with these campaigns had an impact on NBC’s decision, so a well-deserved pat on the back goes to each of you. We also want to thank the critics who joined the fans in championing Chuck, as well as the members of the cast and creative team who not only give us such a wonderful show but reached out to the fans to show their appreciation for our efforts. And special thanks to Chad who created most of the campaign graphics we’ve used, many of them without us even having to ask. When we launched the campaign effort in March, we hoped it would garner a little bit of attention but we had no idea it would become something of a phenomenon. Behold the power of Nerds!

Now that we are assured a Nerd Third, as Mo Ryan from the Chicago Tribune called it, we look forward to spending more time with Chuck fans during the summer hiatus. We have some plans for ways to keep the momentum going into the third season, as well as ways to keep ourselves occupied until September when we meet up again with Chuck, Sarah, Casey, Ellie, Awesome, Morgan and the entire Chuck clan. Stay tuned to ChuckTV.net for details coming soon.

Once again, well done, Chuck fans!

Updated 05.18.09 8:40AM CT: If you’d like to submit an iReport to CNN expressing your thanks to NBC and/or congratulating Chucksters on a job well done, please go to http://www.cnn.com/ireport/ and upload your video. As always, we advise writing out your comments ahead of time for best results. Let’s celebrate!

  1. Great news!

  2. WOOHOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! =)))))

  3. yahooo!!! i’m so thrilled…cant hardly wait….waaaah!!! it’s absoutely awesome!

  4. Not liking the whole scaling back and 13 episodes. Loss of writers is not good either. I think NBC wants to give fans the show but make it so the fans will not like it.

  5. If this show is going to be a success then none of us can let up. We’ve got to keep the momentum going by continuing to watch religously, tell our friends about the show, support the advertisers and do all that has been done this past season. This is too good a show to let go and we’ve got to convince NBC that they’ve made the right decision. I can only hope that they move it to a new time and night to give this show a chance to find the audience that it deserves. This can become a superhit in time and we can all make it happen. CHUCK ME !!!!

AWESOME!!!!! A bummer on the cutbacks and the release of writers, though…hopefully we’ll get enough viewership and support to raise Chuck up for another 13 episodes!

  7. Great news.
Apparently there is an option for a back 9 episodes.
I guess the season would have start well in the ratings for nbc to exercise that option.

    But still,WERE BACK!!

  8. Yay!! Any explanation why there are only 13 episodes rather than 22?

  9. Operations Save Chuck complete, General. We’re ready to move onto phase two: Operation Watch Chuck.

  10. @Nadine: The initial order for 13 episodes is not unusual. Both season 1 and season 2 had 13 episode orders to start with. The writers strike kept season 1 from being extended. The network ordered the “back 9” episodes for season 2 after an advance screening of the first 6 episodes. In other words, there’s still every chance that we’ll end up with a full 22 episode season 3 after all. 🙂

  11. High five, everyone! Let’s keep watching and get another nine!

  12. I wanted to share my thoughts from the other thread. Mel, I am so impressed with this site and your Chuck TV team.

It has been great to read messages from this community.

Learn backward and live forward. peace to all

  13. Chuck Me!!!

  14. @Mark: Aw, shucks. It’s been a real treat to see the fans come together and support an intelligent campaign over the past 2 months. It’s an even bigger treat to have it work!

  15. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

This is one of those moments of triumph that we will never forget :)))))

  16. YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!!! FINALLY!!!!

Awesome news…..sucky though that they have to make some cutbacks. Hopefully Chuck will at least get a decent timeslot

  17. YES! *starts dancing* Christmas in mid-May! This is excellent news—the kind of news I’ve been waiting for since Finals ended!

  18. WOOO HOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very happy at chance of getting full season!!!!

  19. Chuck knows kung fu.

    What do we know?

That our work has only just begun!

Let’s flood the forum with our ideas on how we can get more people to watch Chuck and how we can find new ways to support Chuck’s advertisers and send the message to NBC.

From 6 million to 10 million in 4 months… we can do it! But not without a LOT of work and commitment.

So let’s get started! And share your victory stories to inspire and motivate the other fans.

    Whoo hoo!

    Cheers,
    Gray.

  20. First, let me just echo what everyone else has been saying: WOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOO! YES! SEASON THREE, HERE WE COME!

Okay. Now that I’ve got that out of my system… 🙂

To everyone who is worried about the 13-episode order: There was a lot of speculation that NBC was going to do that with most/all of their shows, and just have 13-episode seasons in order to fit everything in this year with Leno and the Olympics and everything. My personal opinion is at least one of NBC’s new hour-long shows in the fall (and possibly an old one – Southland wasn’t looking good at all in the ratings this year, and I doubt a move to Friday will really help it improve) are going to bomb badly. (My money’s on Parenthood, but that’s just off the two-minute preview clip. Who knows? It could improve). When that happens, I really, sincerely believe TPTB at NBC will give us the full season order, especially if Chuck has maintained even moderate ratings success on Friday (or whatever day it ends up on) and has managed to keep the production costs down.

Stay strong everybody, and get over to the forum to do what Gray says.

  21. Well, well, well. I once more have faith in humanity (or, at least, for another season). This news really means a lot to me, having once had my absolute favorite show cancelled after ending, like Chuck, on the biggest cliff hanger you could’ve possibly imagined. As sad as I felt then, that is how happy I feel now. Thank you NBC for doing the right thing. For renewing Chuck. Thank you fellow fans for all the work you did to pursuade NBC to do the right thing. And thank you Mel and Liz, for this terrific site that I’ve been checking multiple times a day in fevered anticipation, awaiting this wonderful, wonderful news. (Oh, and by the way, Liz was right on how to pronounce my last name… and yes, Mel, it is Italian…)

  22. CHUCK ME! Great news.

Unfortunately in these economic times staff reductions are all too common place. What effect will these budget cuts have on the quality we’ve come to expect from “Chuck”?

  23. On behalf of everyone I just want to say thanks to Mel, Gray, Liz and everyone else who put in serious efforts organizing this endeavor. Without ya’ll’s vision, I’m not sure we could have done it.

It just goes to show that a few nerdy heads put together can do just about anything. 🙂

Way to go everyone! Let’s make sure that it doesn’t all go to waste… Keep it up!

  24. Oh, and WOOOOOOHOOOOOOO!!!!! CHUCK ME!

  25. O/

I’M GET DRUNK FOR CELEBRATE THAT.

  26. Need to keep the momentum going. Have to outdo viewership from the prior to seasons if we’re to get a full 4th season.

  27. WWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOO, THIS IS AWESOME!
I am sure we can get the rest of the episodes if we do our part and promoted the show just like we have been doing for the last three months.

  28. At this point a renewal is great news to hear but I don’t want the same thing to happen as what happened to Jericho where it got renewed only to get canceled again. In order to do this we need to get everyone working on increasing the number of people that watch the show (especially in the US where the TV networks are paying attention). I was sort of thinking that it might be a good idea to create some postage cards (4×6) that anyone can print out with space to put the local time and channel information. I would then print some out and hand them out at the train station in the mornings or at the end of the day. Since i am not that good in the graphics department I was thinking that someone here who is might volunteer to do that and post it to the site. Anyways I will quite the rambling while I am ahead of the game.

  29. finally…. viva la chuck!

  31. wahoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo cant w8.
can nbc get ALL CHUCK on tv in the UK cos most of the tv over here is terrible.

  32. They key for chuck will be what timeslot NBC give it.

If they are smart with their programming, it potentially gives the show a boost of numbers without even trying!!

I suppose we will find out in a couple of hours.

  33. Happy Birthday to me! And to all of the rest of us. Unleash the Casey!

  34. CHUUUUUUUCK MEEEEEEEE!!!! Now let’s get going with the next phase of the campaign – promote & grow CHUCK so we don’t have to sweat out a renewal every year! Keep loaning out or giving out DVDs as gifts. Watch the show on NBC.COM or HULU.COM & encourage friends to do so. Once they start watching, they’ll get hooked! Let’s celebrate!!! But then let’s get back to work! Great job, everybody!
