More Ratings News from Episode 4.14

NBC’s ratings report confirms what we posted last week, but they give us a bit more information from their findings which include the “live plus seven day” comparisons.

On Monday, Feb. 7 from 8-9 p.m. ET, “Chuck” averaged a 1.7 rating, 5 share in adults 18-49 and 5.4 million viewers overall. It’s worth noting that so far this season, “Chuck” has added an average 26 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” rating to its “live plus seven day” figure.

  1. It’s meaningless, though, because advertisers don’t buy the Live+7 number. Moreover, adding 26 percent in the +7 number isn’t extraordinary. Many higher-rated shows than Chuck in the live numbers do as well or better in percentage gains in the +7 numbers. Unless there has been some pre-arranged deal between NBCU (now Comcast) and WB for a renewal, it’s going to be about the May sweeps numbers. And I don’t think 1.7 won’t cut it, especially since Warner probably has no incentive (or even financial leeway) to cut the licensing fee even further to get more episodes for syndication…

    • I totally agree with part of this . The only thing that the Live + 7 numbers tell you is how many people are really watching the show ( since there is really nothing in it for the advertisers due to people fast forwarding through the commercials – the part that is actually paying for the show in the first place ) . They are a good indicator for the network if they thought that more people would tune in to the show on another night – if moved . Which I think if CHUCK is renewed it will be moved to Fridays next year .

The part I disagree with , is that the renewal depending on the May sweeps #’s . The network will take into account the ratings for the ENTIRE year , not just the ” sweeps ” months . The bottom line is when does the show stop becoming profitable to NBC ? When it does , it will be canceled .

  2. still hoping ‘Chuck’ gets renewed for a season 5, if so, I think that will be the last of it. I don’t think there can be much more done after that.

  3. Chuck and Sarah getting married is an excellent ending for the show, if this is the last season. Although, I think they have room for one more..

  4. just posted on the nbc website. don’t understan much about the ratings, yes, i understand they have to make money for the networks, but my wife and i just really enjoy this show and the actors and we hope they give it another season. just love the chemistry between the whole cast.

  5. Do they count On Demand viewers too?

  6. This is average news. About the whole live rating being the most important because of the advertisers, I don’t like that very much. DVRs are here to stay and there’s nothing the advertisers can do about that. So, instead of causing shows to get canceled because of low live ratings, they need to adapt to this changed industry and find other ways to make money. I wonder what advertisers did when VCRs were being used. Because that’s all a DVR is. A modern day VCR. Of course, DVRs can record multiple things at once, but that’s beside the point. A lot of industries are having trouble adjusting to these changes. The music industry, etc. But if you want a good example of how to adapt to a changed industry, look no further than Microsoft. When XP came out, Microsoft was all there was. Apple and Google weren’t big yet. Now, Microsoft has much more competition. But, they’ve adapted very well. The Xbox, Xbox 360, the Zune, Windows 7, Kinect, and now the Windows phone (which, by the way, the magazine Maximum PC says is better than Android). But anyway, hopefully Nielsen will update their ratings system pretty soon. I needs an update so badly.

Also, to everyone who says that Chuck and Sarah’s wedding would be a good way to end the show, I agree with that-partially. I really want to see the show go on after they’re married because of the whole family thing. Do you realize how many things they could do with Chuck and Sarah starting a family? In the beginning of 3×14 when everyone’s in Ellie and Awesome’s apartment, they show Sarah holding the diapers that Devon asked to her get. The looks on her face are hilarious. Knowing who Chuck and Sarah are, it would be very entertaining to watch them start a family.
